Evaluation

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN - Evaluation

Module Title Design: D&AD

Level 02

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The skills I have learnt in this module is managing my time more effectively with setting out a plan for the three briefs over the five weeks. I have found it quite stressful to manage all three briefs at one time but eventually when I had a plan I was able to focus better.
I have been able to use design programs more confidently and I also have used screen printing for the first time properly and found that it worked quite effectivly for one of my briefs. I have noticed that I am able to work well with putting my message clearly across to an audience to create an impact and eyecatching design.
I have learnt to organise and plan the work that needs to be done for the week. I’ve also documented my work with every improvements and changes I have made and also photographing my products into context. I think I need to experiement more with other ideas instead of sticking to just the one so that my designs become stronger.
I have also noticed that I can communicate a little better and take time with my work to make it a quality piece for example the A3 boards they have helped bring my designs together to create as a set.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

I have experimented a lot with layout and format and other printing processes this has helped to see what design looks more effective and works better. Working with three briefs at one time has helped me to come up with ideas and designs more quickly pushing me that step furthur to see what I am capable of doing. Regular crits and talking to piers about my designs have helped by getting good feedback and more focus on what I need to improve on and carry on with.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The strengths in the briefs I think are my design development beacause I have looked at more possible ways of creating things and I have thought about where my designs can be used and displayed. I think the time management and planning shown in these briefs was something that needed to be improved on. My designs created on a computer has improved a lot more and I have been using it a lot more with more confidence then I did before and it has helped with my work to create it more visual.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

My weaknesses lie in time management as it was the first time for me to have three briefs on at one time but I know its something that Im going to have to get used to so I am willing to push myself to make an improvement. My time managment has also been a let down to the quantity of work I produced because I was trying to juggle my time between three briefs I found it difficult to produce a large amount of work because I wanted to focus on the final designs. I did enjoy working on three briefs at one time because it gave me something to come away from when I wanted to have a break from one of the briefs and got me more interested into looking into other things.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

The first thing that I would do differently would be to collect more primary research to work from so I have a bit more inspiration to communicate with, create a time plan of what I need to do each night. I think if I was to get more of a grasp on my time management I might be able to have more control over my work to make it better so what I need to do is stick to a time plan that I can work to.

6. How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Attendance 5
Punctuality 4
Motivation 3
Commitment 3
Quantity of work produced 2
Quality of work produced 3
Contribution to the group 4

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Shelter Development

Here are the first ideas that I came up with for the Shelter posters the message I was trying to convey was to piece together your new home. From the feedback I recieved people thought that it looked to much like I was promoting for an estate agent for a new home. One thing maybe I could have changed to not make it look so much like this was to photograph the house in a more dark and rough area to make it fit more to the message I was trying to convey. But instead I decided to look back at the other ideas I brainstormed and decided on a more stronger idea that I could create with more impact.
Below the puzzle designs are the typographic designs I will be printing on to cardboard, I have chosen to work on to a cardboard box as its a typical object used by the homeless and I wanted something that would create impact.

Shelter Research

Here I looked at existing Shelter posters and adverts, I also looked into poverty generally to see if I could get any inspiration from this. I looked at both image and type so I could decide how I could design my posters.
